Again and again it is claimed that with the continuing influx of refugees into the country also was rising crime. Now, the Bundeskriminalamt has the impact of high numbers of refugees on the recorded crime for the first time thoroughly investigated – and found that the crime has possibly slightly increased, while the number of immigrants has risen considerably.

The Police Authority notes that there is a “widely divergent development of the number of cases in relation to the development of the immigration figures”. Crimes against asylum seekers and refugee shelters were however “quantitatively and qualitatively risen sharply,” it said. We investigated the period from January to September this year.

In the paper, the BKA does, however, also clear that the states carry no uniform statistics and data comparability is therefore limited. Only twelve states have delivered to date figures to the BKA, it could therefore only be derived “trend forecasts”, “blur” are “currently inevitable”.

Asylum seekers are not specifically included in the crime statistics, so that the BKA the term “immigrants” used. These include asylum seekers, tolerated, quota refugees and persons who reside illegally in Germany.

There is “no reason for exaggerated concerns about the increase in crime by asylum seekers and refugees,” said Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière (CDU)

on Friday. If immigrants had committed crimes, so, these were mostly for less serious offenses. Approximately one third of all cases consisted of smaller thefts, another third were assets and counterfeiting offenses, including mainly fare dodging. Violent crimes such as robbery or assault amounted to 16 percent of cases. Offenses against sexual self-determination amounted to less than one percent.

Exception: initial reception
Among the suspects Serbs, Kosovars and Macedonians were overrepresented.

The crime in initial reception, however, has increased significantly, according to the BKA, priorities were property offenses such as robbery and bodily injury. However, the BKA also made it clear that the victims were mostly doing themselves asylum seekers.

Overall, an increase of offenses was recorded in which immigrants have been victims, especially Syrians and Afghans were affected. In addition, offenses have already more than tripled against asylum seekers accommodation compared to the total last year. Attacks on institutions – including violent crime, criminal damage and propaganda offenses – amounted to the beginning of November to more than 600th
