According to Tel Aviv police, the an argument broke out between the man and his significant other on Chelnov street in south Tel Aviv near the corner of Matalon Street.
A man bludgeoned his partner to death in the middle of a south Tel Aviv street Monday morning, police said, before he was apprehended by bystanders.
According to Tel Aviv police, an argument broke out between the man and his significant other around 7am on Chelnov Street in south Tel Aviv near the corner of Matalon Street. While the two were fighting the man grabbed a large rock and struck the woman multiple times, causing her to lose consciousness.
Paramedics called to the scene pronounced the woman dead on the street not long after. Ronen Cohen, a Magen David Adom paramedic, said that after arriving at the scene “we found a woman around 29 years old lying unconscious on the street without a pulse and not breathing. She had a serious head wound and was bleeding from her upper body.”
Cohen said the injuries were so severe paramedics had to pronounce her dead on the street, and did not attempt to take her to hospital.
A Tel Aviv police spokesman said he was not sure if the man, aged 33, was drunk or under the influence of drugs when he attacked the victim.
The man, described as a 29-year-old citizen of Eritrea, was apprehended by an off-duty volunteer police officer who witnessed the attack. The volunteer stopped the man and along with other bystanders held him until police arrived.
The attacker was then arrested on suspicion of murder and will face a remand extension later on Monday or Tuesday morning, police said.
Tel Aviv police said Monday morning they are still trying to determine if the couple – both apparently Eritrean nationals – had a history of domestic violence before the murder, or if they had been in touch with social services.
Police said Monday evening that the suspect confessed to the murder and reenacted the crime for investigators at the scene while in custody later in the day.
