Eritrea is a day&#8217;s trek through dusty hills from the refugee camp in Ethiopia, a way station for tens of thousands of Eritreans who have fled their oppressive homeland.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"body-slot-mod\">\u00a0But while life is tough in the town-like camp of thousands &#8212; living in baking heat in simple canvas tents or brick houses &#8212; no one thinks of going back, or of staying in the camps.<\/div>\n<p>Escape from the hermetic Red Sea state means only one thing &#8212; to travel onwards for a better life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want to go, to go anywhere,&#8221; 25-year old Abraham told AFP in Hitsats camp in northeastern Ethiopia, just south of the Eritrean border.<\/p>\n<p>For those who have fled the dictatorial regime of President Isaias Afwerki, which has created a repressive system in which people are routinely arrested on a whim, detained, tortured, killed or disappeared, a return home offers only a prison sentence &#8212; or worse &#8212; for treason.<\/p>\n<p>Once they have left, the only possible move is onwards abroad &#8211; and for most, that dream is of an eventual life in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The Horn of Africa nation is no war zone, yet the people of the England-sized arid country of some six million people make up the third-largest number of those risking the dangerous crossing to Europe, after Syrians and Afghans.<\/p>\n<p>New arrivals in the camp dismiss the risks of ruthless people smugglers and treacherous waters to plot travel onwards north to Sudan, and then on to Europe.<\/p>\n<div id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1441818610359_1143\" class=\"body-related\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1441818610359_1141\" class=\"img-wrap\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1441818610359_1140\" class=\"cta-overlay\"><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"body-related-thumb\" src=\"http:\/\/l3.yimg.com\/bt\/api\/res\/1.2\/IFllO7Gb2P8_wSmJYGwR4g--\/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3NfbGVnbztmaT1maWxsO2g9MjAxO3E9NzU7dz0zMDA-\/http:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en_us\/News\/afp.com\/Part-PAR-Par8263116-1-1-0.jpg\" alt=\"New arrivals in the camp dismiss the risks of ruthless&amp;nbsp;&amp;hellip;\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" data-src-2x=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"body-related-title photo-caption\">New arrivals in the camp dismiss the risks of ruthless people smugglers and treacherous waters to pl\u00a0\u2026<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But for many their dreams are stalled, waiting for the hard cash needed to pay the traffickers to smuggle them onwards.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8216;We have no choice&#8217; &#8211;<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1441818610359_1145\">&#8220;Germany, Canada, England, Switzerland,&#8221; the young people say in turn, all countries with significant Eritrean communities.<\/p>\n<p>Like most refugees here, they worry of reprisals against their family still in Eritrea if they give their full name.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If it is possible to go illegally to Sudan, we will go. We know it&#8217;s dangerous,&#8221; Abraham added. &#8220;We know we can lose our lives, but we have no choice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1441818610359_1148\">Officially, Hitsats camp houses nearly 45,000 refugees, although in reality, the number is far lower, according to aid workers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1441818610359_1150\">Ethiopian authorities mark arrivals but not departures of the 112,000 registered Eritrean refugees into the country.<\/p>\n<div id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1441818610359_1155\" class=\"body-related\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1441818610359_1153\" class=\"img-wrap\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1441818610359_1152\" class=\"cta-overlay\"><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"body-related-thumb\" src=\"http:\/\/l1.yimg.com\/bt\/api\/res\/1.2\/Sjz3rDqPtE52y69KP3A60A--\/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3NfbGVnbztmaT1maWxsO2g9MTkxO3E9NzU7dz0zMDA-\/http:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en_us\/News\/afp.com\/Part-PAR-Par8263132-1-1-0.jpg\" alt=\"Ethiopian authorities mark arrivals but not departures&amp;nbsp;&amp;hellip;\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" data-src-2x=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"body-related-title photo-caption\">Ethiopian authorities mark arrivals but not departures of the 112,000 registered Eritrean refugees i\u00a0\u2026<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Perhaps less than 40,000 are in the country today: Eritreans use Ethiopia only as a stepping stone to travel onwards.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No one wants to stay in the camps where they have nothing else to do,&#8221; said Dennis Likule, a resettlement expert from the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we had opportunities for the refugees to be out of camps and have something meaningful then we would be encouraging a certain percentage to stay around and integrate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ethiopia, one of the poorest and most densely populated countries in Africa, does not grant work permits to Eritreans on its soil.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1441818610359_1157\">Instead, refugees here must find a visa and legal refugee status in a third country.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1441818610359_1159\">Few however can do so.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1441818610359_1161\">Barely a thousand Eritrean refugees in Ethiopia were offered resettlement in the United States or Canada via UNHCR last year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"body-related\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n<div class=\"cta-overlay\"><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"body-related-thumb\" src=\"http:\/\/l3.yimg.com\/bt\/api\/res\/1.2\/lx5Y9es0ixyqT3WLgMHb0Q--\/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3NfbGVnbztmaT1maWxsO2g9MTk5O3E9NzU7dz0zMDA-\/http:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en_us\/News\/afp.com\/Part-WAS-Was8940980-1-1-0.jpg\" alt=\"Everyone here knows the price of a one-way ticket to&amp;nbsp;&amp;hellip;\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" data-src-2x=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"body-related-title photo-caption\">Everyone here knows the price of a one-way ticket to Europe: $1,000 (900 euros) to go to Sudan, then\u00a0\u2026<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1441818610359_1163\">The only European countries to have offered places &#8212; France, Norway and Switzerland &#8212; have taken only 12 people.<\/p>\n<p>With a lack of legal channels, the refugees are forced to seek a new life on their own.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone here knows the price of a one-way ticket to Europe: $1,000 (900 euros) to go to Sudan, then, after travel to Libya, some $4,000 or $5,000 for a place on a boat chancing the dangerous sea crossing to Europe.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8216;Dream of changing my life&#8217; &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>For those who cannot pay, family members already in the diaspora help with the cash.<\/p>\n<p>Once in Europe, the Eritreans are much more likely to get asylum than if they remain in Ethiopian camps.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I know all about the risks from relatives and friends,&#8221; said Meaza, a 25-year old woman, who left with a group of around 20 friends, hoping to reach Europe, or Canada.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1441818610359_1165\">&#8220;As a woman, I know I can face sexual assault. One of my relatives died in the Mediterranean&#8230; I dream of changing my life, and the life of my family who stayed in Eritrea.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1441818610359_1167\">But the wait can be long.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1441818610359_1169\">Samson, 28, has spent a quarter of his life in the camps here, waiting to find a route out.<\/p>\n<p>Denied a request for asylum in the US, he has spent much of the past seven years waiting on a request to Canada to be accepted.<\/p>\n<p>Now he is tired of depending on UN food aid handouts, boosting his income with a small job helping in the running of the camp.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1441818610359_1202\">&#8220;I need to go somewhere where I can make a living,&#8221; said Samson, who fled Eritrea&#8217;s capital Asmara after having been jailed for requesting a delay in military conscription to continue his studies.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1441818610359_1200\">&#8220;Without any process, I will leave illegally &#8211; I&#8217;m young, I need to do something,&#8221; he said, saying he was eyeing the journey to Europe.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1441818610359_1198\">&#8220;It is not a good option &#8212; lots of people die, but if resettlement doesn&#8217;t work, it is a choice.
