Britain also\u00a0deployed 120 extra police to the port. And French officers sprayed tear gas this month\u00a0on a group who cut through fencing near the chunnel.<\/p>\n<p>Pascal Aerts, who leads the French team that polices the migrants, told the BBC that fences were a short-term solution that pushes the migrants to other places with weaker security, possibly at ports in the Netherlands and Belgium. Migrants have also begun gathering at Dunkirk, France,\u00a0near Calais, hoping to cross into England.<\/p>\n<p>British Prime Minister David Cameron provoked outrage recently by referring to migrants trying to reach Britain as a &#8220;swarm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He should remember he is talking about people and not insects,&#8221; \u00a0said\u00a0Harriet Harman, a veteran politician from the left-leaning Labour Party.<\/p>\n<p>Human rights groups, including the Refugee Council, also condemned Cameron&#8217;s language. In one incident last month, more than 2,000 tried to enter the tunnel, followed by another 1,500 people the next day.<\/p>\n<p>In just three weeks, between June 21 and July 11, the British government said more than 8,000 attempts to illegally enter Britain were intercepted at French ports by British and French authorities working together. Britain says it made &#8220;considerable progress&#8221; in targeting gangs of\u00a0smugglers\u00a0in Calais\u00a0through better intelligence sharing and more collaboration between law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Employers in the United Kingdom\u00a0who hire illegal immigrants face fines as high as\u00a0$31,200 and up to two years in jail. The predominantly male camp also has a church and a barbershop.<\/p>\n<p>Many have risked their lives\u00a0to be get here, coming from such conflict-ravaged\u00a0countries as\u00a0Sudan, Syria and Afghanistan and from Eritrea, where many are fleeing compulsory conscription.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I want to go to England,&#8221; said\u00a0Muzammil Mohamed Ali, 22, from Darfur in Sudan.\u00a0&#8220;London is in my heart.&#8221; The tech graduate\u00a0told USA TODAY he wants to study further in England and work in IT.<\/p>\n<p>His friend Abdullbashe Mosa, 26, also wants to make it to England. &#8220;There are big problems in Darfur,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I want to learn English. When I go there it will be good for me because in Sudan the second language is English. But I think nowadays it would be difficult to go to the U.K.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Many of those fleeing conflict, poverty and persecution are desperate to reach England and try to sneak onto the trucks to get there.\u00a0Many migrants know English and have relatives in the U.K, making it the best option for them in Europe. Car and van drivers have been recruited by smugglers to transport migrants to Britain through the Channel Tunnel or on cross-Channel ferries. At least nine people have died since June near the terminal of Eurotunnel, which operates the route.<\/p>\n<p>Andy Mohamed, also from Darfur, crossed the Mediterranean Sea by boat to Italy, before getting a train through France to Calais.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The sea was very dangerous,&#8221; he said. &#8220;There were lots of people from Sudan, Eritrea, Sudan, Afghanistan, Ethiopia and Egypt.&#8221; He said he may remain in France after his left hand was damaged by a train as he tried to reach the U.K. &#8220;England is dangerous,&#8221; he said. &#8220;You can die.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mustafa Alatoom, 28, left Daraa in south Syria a year ago because of the ongoing war. He didn&#8217;t want to do national service and traveled through Turkey, Greece, Macedonia,Serbia, Hungary, Austria and Germany to eventually reach Calais, which took a month.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not going to do national service and kill my people,&#8221; said\u00a0Alatoom, a languages graduate. &#8220;I&#8217;m going to England &#8230; maybe London. I&#8217;m going to apply for asylum.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about attempts to stop migrants from crossing the English Channel, \u00a0he said: &#8220;They think they will stop people going to England? All the world used to be British andFrench colonies, and now they don&#8217;t want us to go to their countries.
