Instead, it <strong>gleefully advertises the Eritrean mine as \u201cuntapped potential\u201d.<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/act.sumofus.org\/go\/10201?t=2&amp;akid=12308.164144.wT06Nc\" target=\"_blank\">Tell Nevsun Resources to stop allowing slavery in its mines.<\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Now that this UN report is out, the international community will be watching closely.<\/strong> Nevsun even had to respond publicly to the allegations. Its answer? That the UN failed to rely on the company\u2019s own \u201cindependent\u201d human rights assessment.<br \/>\nFew dispute that the Eritrean state has been involved in significant human rights abuses. But <strong>Nevsun is the only foreign mining company paying royalties and taxes to the Eritrean treasury<\/strong> \u2014 almost a billion dollars so far, and another $14 billion over the next ten years.<br \/>\nWhy does Nevsun do this? Because it\u2019s <strong>making billions of dollars<\/strong> from the Bisha mine.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/act.sumofus.org\/go\/10201?t=3&amp;akid=12308.164144.wT06Nc\" target=\"_blank\">Nevsun Resources: Make sure all the workers at Bisha are paid fairly for their work.<\/a><br \/>\nNevsun says these indentured workers were sub-contracted, and therefore not its responsibility. Imagine if every mining company across the world took this position, and tried to <strong>wash their hands of the most egregious of human rights abuses<\/strong> happening right under their noses.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s increasingly common \u2014 companies are trying to bury human rights abuses through opaque supply chains, and mining companies are some of the worst.<br \/>\nTogether, we can prevent more shady investment in Eritrea \u2014 especially for companies that want to follow Nevsun\u2019s example and profit from the sweat and tears of indentured workers.<br \/>\nWe\u2019ve done it before \u2014 a few months ago <strong>we got the CEO of mining giant Newmont to agree to stop building its Conga mine in Peru without community consent.<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/act.sumofus.org\/go\/10201?t=4&amp;akid=12308.164144.wT06Nc\" target=\"_blank\">Tell Nevsun there\u2019s no excuse for slavery \u2014 make sure ALL your workers get paid!<\/a><br \/>\nThanks for all that you do,<br \/>\nKaytee, Ledys, Rosa and the team at SumOfUs<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The survivors of conscription in Eritrea have reported brutal scenes of torture, rape, and summary execution.
