\u00a0<\/span>The Horn of Africa\u00a0after World War II\u00a0has been in turmoil ever since\u00a0the\u00a0colonialists\u00a0left the area. The<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>subsequent division of\u00a0Somalia\u00a0 between\u00a0Great Britain\u00a0and Italy is the source of all evils in Somalia today.\u00a0Somalia\u00a0\u00a0since then\u00a0has\u00a0been mired\u00a0in\u00a0turmoil except for a brief\u00a0period during the\u00a0ironclad\u00a0rule of\u00a0Ziad<\/span>\u00a0Bare. Ethiopia lost its northern province(Eritrea) to Italy due to an\u00a0ill informed agreement between\u00a0Emperor\u00a0Minilik<\/span>\u00a0of Ethiopia\u00a0and Italy. After Italy left the area, Ethiopia too was involved in a 30 year long civil strife. The Sudan has been mired in north south civil strife ever since the British left<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Against the above background, there was hope for peace in the region when\u00a0Ziad<\/span>\u00a0Bare\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0regime was removed\u00a0\u00a0from power in\u00a0Somalia and the EPRDF overthrew\u00a0\u00a0the\u00a0Derge<\/span>\u00a0from Ethiopia.\u00a0Though\u00a0a\u00a0flickering\u00a0of\u00a0hope\u00a0dawned in\u00a0the region\u00a0in the early Nineties<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>it was<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>short lived.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Events since have not\u00a0been\u00a0as desirable as one wants it to be in the region.\u00a0And there is a reason for it.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After a thirty-year bloody war, the Eritrean rebels managed to secure their independence\u00a0from Ethiopia following a referendum in 1993.\u00a0However, since Eritrea became independent\u00a0its people were denied their freedom by the government of\u00a0Isaias<\/span>\u00a0Afeworki<\/span>. They are<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>still<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>yearning\u00a0 for\u00a0their freedom! The one-man regime\u00a0in Eritrea\u00a0has squandered the country’s resources\u00a0to fuel\u00a0civil strife and war in neighboring countries. Recently released\u00a0news puts Eritrea as the six most\u00a0in debt\u00a0countries in the world.\u00a0No one but\u00a0Isaias<\/span>\u00a0Afeworki<\/span>\u00a0knows for sure where the money has gone which<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>resulted in causing<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the country to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>have low ranking. But there are some pointers that give<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>us<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a clue.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0UN monitors assigned\u00a0to\u00a0investigate the\u00a0Eritrean\u00a0regime\u2019s\u00a0involvement with\u00a0Al-Shebab<\/span>\u00a0of <\/span>\"berhanu-nega-eritrea1.jpg\"Somalia and its aggression against\u00a0Djibouti has produced<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a lengthy report on\u00a0the regime which suggests<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the regime<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>being<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>involved in supporting Al-Shebab<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0Djibouti\u00a0, Ethiopia and Somalia governments think \u00a0the regime has been helping and supporting the terrorists group\u00a0Al-Shebab<\/span>\u00a0and other Ethiopian rebel groups. It\u00a0\u00a0is<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>an open secret that today the Eritrean government Ethiopian oppositions who are determined to take power by the barrel of the gun. As recent as\u00a0yesterday there is a widely circulated report (see story link<\/a>)\u00a0that\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Berhanu<\/span>\u00a0Nega<\/span>\u00a0a US\u00a0legal resident,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>if not<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>naturalized citizen, is in Asmara to coordinate and lead armed forces\u00a0against Ethiopia from a base in\u00a0Eritrea. The\u00a0Eritrean\u00a0regime is also\u00a0the\u00a0number one suspect behind\u00a0one faction of the South Sudanese rebel group\u00a0which\u00a0is\u00a0murdering and raping innocent civilians.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The trip of Dr.\u00a0Berhanu<\/span>\u00a0comes\u00a0days before President Obama is to visit Kenya and Ethiopia. Ethiopia and Kenya are wary of the potential terrorist plot\u00a0that the likes of Al-Shabab<\/span>,\u00a0Shabia<\/span>\u00a0of Eritrea and\u00a0Dr.Birhanu<\/span>\u00a0Nega<\/span>\u00a0are plotting. The Eritrean regime in the past\u00a0has\u00a0tried to derail Ethiopia’s peace\u00a0during\u00a0such huge events.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It is worth noting<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>if there is any terrorist event in Ethiopia<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the next few weeks it is to shame the country for hosting the president of the United\u00a0States. It is worth to note also, if any terrorist event happens Dr.\u00a0Berhanu<\/span>\u00a0and his armed wing will be the primary suspects since it is public secret\u00a0that<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Dr.Berhanu<\/span><\/span>\u00a0in the past has said it will use any means necessary to topple the government of Ethiopia.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The question is did Dr.\u00a0Berhanu<\/span>,\u00a0a legal resident of the USA,\u00a0go\u00a0to Eritrea to start war while President Obama is visiting the area? Will the one-man regime in Eritrea survive its latest transgression of Ethiopian sovereignty and peace for long?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Horn region is in dire need of peace. Ethiopia as the most populous and stable country should play its role.\u00a0As much as\u00a0it has promoted and helped the\u00a0peace in Somalia it needs to\u00a0do likewise\u00a0in Eritrea. The Eritrean people need freedom\u00a0and\u00a0peace. Northern Ethiopian residents need peace.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The USA should encourage Ethiopia\u00a0to promote democracy more than it<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>doing but it should also help Ethiopia in safeguarding its peace and\u00a0that of\u00a0the region. The USA should not babysit rogue regimes like\u00a0Isaias<\/span>\u00a0Afeworki\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0regime.\u00a0The USA should not give legal protection to people who promote war and mayhem and terrorist act. There is no legal or moral ground\u00a0to\u00a0protect people like Dr.\u00a0Berhanu<\/span>\u00a0who are openly working to destabilize a sovereign country.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
