{"id":1799,"date":"2015-05-11T21:13:04","date_gmt":"2015-05-11T21:13:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitederitreamedia.com\/blog12\/?p=1799"},"modified":"2015-05-11T21:13:04","modified_gmt":"2015-05-11T21:13:04","slug":"analysis-eritrea-may-play-role-in-anti-houthi-campaign-11-may-2015-2351","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitederitreamedia.com\/blog12\/2015\/05\/11\/analysis-eritrea-may-play-role-in-anti-houthi-campaign-11-may-2015-2351\/","title":{"rendered":"ANALYSIS: Eritrea may play role in anti-Houthi campaign 11 May 2015 23:51"},"content":{"rendered":"<header>\n<div class=\"header bg\">\n<div class=\"pcontent\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div id=\"content\">\n<div class=\"content-top show\">\n<div class=\"pcontent\">\n<div id=\"gallery\" class=\"gallery-simple news-gallery lfl\">\n<ul id=\"image_list\">\n<li class=\"selected\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"news-image\" src=\"http:\/\/webcdn.aa.com.tr\/webdocs\/625x424xc\/content_new\/223\/yemen-jpg20150509190902.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"233\" height=\"158\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sidebar\">\n<div class=\"teaser\">\n<h3>Alliance preparing to launch naval crackdown to seize smugglers&#8217; boats off Libya<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clearfix\">\u00a009 May 2015 19:07 (Last updated 09 May 2015 22:12)<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pcontent\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"news-content\">\n<div class=\"news-kunye\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"news-maincontent\">\n<div class=\"rt-buttons\">\u00a0By Mohamed Tawakel<\/div>\n<p><strong>ADDIS ABABA\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies continue their air campaign against Yemen&#8217;s Shiite militant Houthi group, there are indications that <a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/eritrea\">Eritrea<\/a> may play a role within the anti-Houthi offensive in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Since late March, warplanes from Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries have been pounding Houthi positions across <a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/yemen\">Yemen.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Riyadh says the offensive is in response to appeals by embattled Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi for intervention against the Houthis.<\/p>\n<p>But in recent days, signs began to surface that Asmara might play a role in the Saudi-led offensive, following an exchange of visits by officials from <a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/eritrea\">Eritrea<\/a> and countries participating in the anti-Houthi campaign.<\/p>\n<p>On April 28, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki visited Saudi Arabia for talks with King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Deputy Crown Prince and Defense Minister Mohamed bin Salman on the situation in<a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/yemen\">Yemen<\/a> and security in the Red Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Two days earlier, high-level delegations from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates \u2013 both members of the anti-Houthi coalition \u2013 visited <a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/eritrea\">Eritrea<\/a> and toured a number of islands and ports close to Yemen, according to Eritrean sources.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Egypt&#8217;s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry \u2013 whose country is also a member of the anti-Houthi campaign \u2013 paid a rare visit to <a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/eritrea\">Eritrea<\/a> and held talks with Eritrean officials.<\/p>\n<p>According to a statement by Egypt&#8217;s Foreign Ministry, Shoukry&#8217;s talks in <a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/eritrea\">Eritrea<\/a> focused on African developments, particularly the situation in Yemen, and security in the Red Sea.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Geopolitics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/eritrea\">Eritrea<\/a> has an extensive coastline along the Red Sea, making it a possible launching spot for any ground offensive in <a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/yemen\">Yemen.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eritrean ports are close to Yemen&#8217;s coast. The port of Assab is only 60km away from the Yemeni coast, while the port of Massawa is 380km away from al-Hudayda port in western <a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/yemen\">Yemen.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Al-Hudayda port acquires a special importance and whoever controls it will be able to prevent any ground movement by the Houthis from the north as well as any Iranian naval moves,&#8221; retired Yemeni general Mohsen Khasrof told Anadolu Agency.<\/p>\n<p>Eritrea&#8217;s terrain is quite similar to Yemen&#8217;s rugged landscape. This would make the Horn of Africa country of great importance to the Saudi-led coalition in terms of training and troops&#8217; landing in <a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/yemen\">Yemen.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/eritrea\">Eritrea<\/a> also has a trained army of 200,000 troops and naval forces, making it of prime importance for the Saudi-led coalition, particularly in light of Pakistan&#8217;s reluctance to take part in the anti-Houthi offensive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Military experience<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/eritrea\">Eritrea<\/a> fought a short war with <a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/yemen\">Yemen<\/a> over the disputed island of Greater Hanish in 1995.<\/p>\n<p>Although Eritrean forces overran the disputed island in just three days, arbitration has given the island back to <a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/yemen\">Yemen.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1998, <a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/eritrea\">Eritrea<\/a> fought a three-year war with neighboring Ethiopia over a border triangle, a conflict that left thousands of people on both sides dead.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/eritrea\">Eritrea<\/a> also engaged in two border conflicts with neighboring Djibouti in recent years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Concern<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, Eritrea&#8217;s relations with both Israel and Iran might raise Arab doubts when it comes to any possible Eritrean role in the anti-Houthi campaign.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/eritrea\">Eritrea<\/a> has diplomatic relations with Israel since 1993.<\/p>\n<p>Eritrean-Israeli relations nosedived in 1998 after Asmara accused the self-proclaimed Jewish state of taking sides with Ethiopia during the Eritrean-Ethiopian war.<\/p>\n<p>However, relations improved again. Israel established a military base in <a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/eritrea\">Eritrea<\/a> and provided military and financial aid to the Horn of Africa country.<\/p>\n<p>Eritrea&#8217;s relations with Iran also raised concern in Saudi Arabia, with Riyadh criticizing a visit by Afewerki to Tehran in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>The Yemeni government also accused <a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/eritrea\">Eritrea<\/a> of providing military support and weapons to the Houthis.<\/p>\n<p>Opponents of the Eritrean president also claim that the commander of Iran&#8217;s Al-Quds Brigade Major-General Qassem Soleimani had visited Asmara more than once, claims vehemently denied by Asmara.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Benefits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Analysts say that any Eritrean involvement in the anti-Houthi campaign will be of great benefit for the Afwerki regime in that it will boost his position and break his international isolation.<\/p>\n<p>They say that the Eritrean move to join the Saudi-led offensive will help Asmara win support against its regional rivals Ethiopia and Djibouti, who have been quick to support the anti-Houthi onslaught.<\/p>\n<p>According to analysts, joining the anti-Houthi campaign will also help <a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/eritrea\">Eritrea<\/a> ease tension with the United States and remove sanctions imposed on the country by the UN Security Council in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Khasrof believes that if <a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/eritrea\">Eritrea<\/a> did not join the anti-Houthi campaign, the Saudi-led coalition would at least seek to neutralize its role.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Given the close border and short space between <a class=\"modp_tagclass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/mod\/tag\/eritrea\">Eritrea<\/a> and Yemen, it would be better [for the Saudi-led coalition] to at least neutralize Asmara from the conflict,&#8221;
