{"id":7982,"date":"2016-12-30T18:13:42","date_gmt":"2016-12-30T18:13:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitederitreamedia.com\/blog12\/?p=7982"},"modified":"2016-12-30T18:13:42","modified_gmt":"2016-12-30T18:13:42","slug":"agreement-hand-red-sea-islands-approved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/unitederitreamedia.com\/blog12\/2016\/12\/30\/agreement-hand-red-sea-islands-approved\/","title":{"rendered":"Agreement to hand over Red Sea islands approved"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/sy\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/tpAEBD8ckTZDzIeJ5oDlUw--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjtzbT0xO3c9ODAw\/http:\/\/slingstone.zenfs.com\/offnetwork\/7e170ed2582260d225e184e0a049834a\" width=\"442\" height=\"248\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Egypt&#8217;s government has approved a controversial deal to hand over two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia, according to state television.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement has been sent to parliament for ratification, according to reports on Thursday, despite a legal dispute in Egyptian courts over the plan.<\/p>\n<div class=\"teads-inread\"><\/div>\n<p>In June, the Higher Administrative Court <a class=\"internallink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2016\/06\/egypt-court-voids-red-sea-islands-transfer-saudi-160621101413590.html\" target=\"_self\">ruled <\/a>that the deal was void, saying Egyptian sovereignty over Tiran and Sanafir\u00a0could not be ceded.<\/p>\n<p>The Egyptian government filed an appeal shortly afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, an Egyptian state advisory body recommended that the Cairo court uphold the ruling that annulled the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>The court is due to issue its final verdict on January 16 and is not obliged to follow the advisory body&#8217;s report.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Reuters news agency quoted\u00a0Khaled Ali, a lawyer who filed the June lawsuit to annul the deal, as saying that the government&#8217;s latest move shows &#8220;the collapse of the state of law and the constitution&#8221; in Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The decision that parliament is going to issue is void and the people should defend their land with all legitimate means against this tyrant regime that doesn&#8217;t respect either law or judiciary,&#8221; Ali said.<\/p>\n<p>However, Nabil al-Gamal, a member of the legislative and constitutional committee in parliament, said there was &#8220;absolutely no conflict&#8221; in sending the agreement to parliament for ratification before the court&#8217;s final ruling.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I expect the parliament not to vote &#8230; on the agreement before the judiciary rules, so that there won&#8217;t be any conflict between them,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>The initial deal was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2016\/04\/egypt-give-saudi-arabia-red-sea-islands-160411060631501.html\" target=\"_self\">made public <\/a>in April during a visit to Cairo by Saudi Arabia&#8217;s King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, during which he announced an aid package to Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement set off rare protests and outrage by Egyptians who said the two uninhabited islands belonged to Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>Following the protests, 71 people were <a class=\"internallink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2016\/05\/egyptian-court-jails-51-islands-protests-160514161332461.html\" target=\"_self\">sentenced <\/a>to two years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Egypt says the islands had always belonged to Saudi Arabia and that it had merely administered them while on lease since the 1950s.<\/p>\n<p>President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, a former army chief who overthrew his predecessor in 2013, has been accused by activists of tolerating no dissent.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"\/mritems\/Images\/2016\/6\/21\/777c9397fa2f47659a4cdd5b7828e99b_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2016\/6\/21\/777c9397fa2f47659a4cdd5b7828e99b_18.jpg\" width=\"395\" height=\"222\" border=\"0\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"caption\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; Egypt&#8217;s government has approved a controversial deal to hand over two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia, according to state television.
