It was in August 2014 Wesen Tsegaye, a 24-year-old asylum seeker from Eritrea, sought care at Danderyd Hospital after a call from the Swedish Migration Board. The man had suffered from renal condition and had fainted and suffered from dizziness on several occasions. He himself was worried that he was suffering from a hereditary disease, since both his brother and father died suddenly at a young age.<\/p>\n
Led by hereditary heart disease<\/h4>\n
Danderyd Hospital launched an investigation and concluded that the brother and father, as well as the patient’s grandfather and uncle, had the diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy – an inherited heart disease. Another brother must have received treatment for the disease in Kenya through a so-called ICD, which means that you are operating a defibrillator to the patient.<\/p>\n
Danderyd Hospital should have come to the conclusion that an ICD would be the best treatment even in Wesen Tsegays cases. Yet he received no help.<\/p>\n
Died on the way to the bus<\/h4>\n
The reason must have been Wesen Tsegays status as asylum seekers. Danderyd Hospital’s assessment was that there was too great a risk that the Wesen Tsegaye would be deported to a country where he would not be able to get the right follow-up treatment. The result was then that he received no treatment at all.<\/p>\n
– Implanting a defibrillator involves a lifelong treatment requiring access to advanced cardiac emergency care when severe complications can occur, says medical director Asa Lindstrom Hammer, who is responsible for patient safety at Danderyd Hospital.<\/p>\n
– These can be fatal unless there is access to the right specialist care, she says.<\/p>\n
On 12 October last year had Wesen Tsegaye late for the bus, tells Aftonbladet. He ran to catch when he suddenly collapsed. He died despite several resuscitation attempts.<\/p>\n
Close friend reported the hospital<\/h4>\n

Hospital: “No need to be self-critical”<\/h4>\n
The IVO’s decision addressed the criticism of Danderyd Hospital assessment of Wesen Tsegays possibilities for finishing. They write that although it was reasonable to take into account the risk that the patient can not get treatment if he is deported to a country without the possibility of proper care, but points out that the Danderyd hospital did not investigate the matter properly. – We can now retrospectively see that we had difficulties in interpreting the term ‘health care that can not be deferred “for patients who are to be deported, or risk being expelled, and therefore we need to expand knowledge in the area of the hospital to reduce the risk of something similar happens again, she says.<\/p>\n
Is there reason to be self-critical?<\/em><\/p>\n – There’s always reason to be self-critical.<\/p>\n Wesen Tsegays sister Elsa has over time tried to turn the incident into something positive.
