45,711 refugees and asylum seekers live in Israel as of April 2015, of which 92% are from Eritrea or Sudan. They were forced to leave their homes and their countries to seek asylum in Israel due to persecution, civil wars, genocide and other horrors. Between 5,000 and 7,000 men and women are survivors of the torture camps in Sinai who carry the scars of captivity and cruel torture on their body and within their hearts.<\/p>\n

The refugees who have reached Israel face harsh realities: Thousands of asylum-seekers are living in various towns in Israel without regulated status, without work permits and without access to vital health and welfare services, legal aid or housing.<\/div>\n

Due to the uncertainty and lack of status and rights, the asylum-seekers are wrestling with severe economic, physical and emotional predicaments. Their dread of what the future may bring and their constant fear of arrest or deportation, as well as the rigid restrictions imposed on refugees, undermine their rehabilitation and recovery from the traumas of past events.<\/p>\n

About 2,000 asylum seekers, mostly from Darfur, are imprisoned for a long period of time at\u00a0Holot detention center<\/a>, under the Anti-Infiltration Law<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
