Mekelle\u2014Lt. Gen. Tadesse Werede, President of the Tigray Interim Administration, has dismissed the National Election Board of Ethiopia\u2019s (NEBE) decision to revoke the legal status of the Tigray People\u2019s Liberation Front (TPLF) as \u201cunacceptable,\u201d stressing that the matter requires a political solution rather than bureaucratic sanction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe TPLF is not an ordinary party. You cannot simply say, \u2018I have revoked it.\u2019 That is a very serious matter with clear consequences,\u201d he told local media<\/a>. He underscored that most Tigrayan elites, including opposition members, have had ties with the TPLF and described the organization as a \u201chistoric party\u201d whose cancellation \u201ccannot be accepted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interim president said the standoff between NEBE and the TPLF poses \u201ca major challenge\u201d that must be addressed through negotiation. He added that while the party accepted what he called \u201ca disastrous certificate\u201d under NEBE\u2019s controversial special registration, \u201cnegotiation is the only viable solution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 2025,\u00a0NEBE revoked the TPLF\u2019s\u00a0<\/a>legal status, citing the party\u2019s failure to implement \u201ccorrective measures\u201d ordered by the Board to meet requirements tied to its special status, including convening a general assembly within six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The TPLF rejected the decision<\/a>, insisting that its legitimacy is guaranteed under the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA) and not through NEBE\u2019s conditional framework. The party previously dismissed both its suspension and subsequent revocation as \u201clegally insignificant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While urging for negotiations, Lt. Gen. Tadesse echoed concerns that the exclusion of the TPLF risks undermining the Pretoria process and alienating broad segments of the Tigrayan political class. \u201cThe TPLF\u2019s case with the election board should be resolved politically. Negotiation is the only solution,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NEBE\u2019s decision effectively reclassified the TPLF as an \u201cillegal political party\u201d and revived NEBE\u2019s January 2021 decision to revoke the group\u2019s legal status, which was originally based on the TPLF\u2019s \u201cengagement in armed conflict.\u201d In May 2021, the Ethiopian Parliament approved a Council of Ministers bill\u00a0designating the TPLF<\/a>\u00a0as a terrorist organization. Later, in March 2023, Parliament\u00a0lifted the designation<\/a>\u00a0following the signing of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
